Prologue
Itwas night, yet none were asleep. Near the castle, at the edge of theforest, the enemy army was preparing to strike. The guards have beenforetold of the coming attack and were getting their defenses readyfor it.
Insidethe castle, the queen was in the courtyard, dressed and ready. Besideher, a man in a black cloak was waiting. The whole castle seemed tobe holding it's breath, waiting.
Suddenly, the first group of attackers came forward. The archers shot flamingarrows over the castle wall, setting the inside aflame. The nextgroup of attackers came into the battle on the backs of giantspiders. The guards were shooting arrows at the archers until then, but once they saw the spiders, they started to shoot them down. Thespider group's job was to open the gate from the inside.
Backin the courtyard, the queen heard the battle start. She walked to anearby tree, bent down, and picked up a bundle. She handed it to theman and told him to meet her at the back gate. As he was leaving, thecaptain of the guard ran in, breathless and sweating.
“YourMajesty!” he panted. “Your prediction came true. The Dark Wizardhas brought his army!”
“Whatis happening now?” the queen demanded.
“Theysent the spiders and the gate has been opened.”
“Keepthem out of the castle. They have a dragon on their side now, so becareful.” The queen dismissed him.
Asshe turned to leave, she noticed a flash of light on the groundbeside the tree where the bundle had been. When she saw what it was,she gasped. It was a silver, heart shaped locket with a 'J' on thefront and a picture of herself and a baby on the inside. It was meantfor the bundle and must have fallen when she picked the bundle up.She grabbed the locket and ran to the back gates where the man withthe precious bundle, a baby, were both waiting. The queen wasthankful that the enemy hadn't thought of the back of the castle yet. They would be able to make a safe trip into the forest beyond.
Theman handed her the baby as soon as she was in reach. The queen putthe locket around the baby's neck. The necklace is big on her now,the queen thought, but she will grow into it. The queen turned herhead to the battle still raging at the front of the castle, then sheturned back and into the woods, the man right behind her. They had tohurry. The enemy army was getting closer to the castle doors. Theyfinally stopped in front of a big oak tree and the queen whisperedsomething into it's bark. Then she turned and spoke to the man.
“Youmust hurry. He will notice us gone soon.” She hugged the baby sheheld in her arms, knowing that she will not be able to see herdaughter for years. It felt like an hour had passed when the mangently touched her arm. The queen glanced at the tree and saw that itwas glowing.
“Theportal's open. We have to go now.” said the man as he pulled thequeen and her daughter into a hug. The queen realized she was cryingas she stepped out of the hug, leaving the child in the man's arms.
Fearand loss flashed into her honey brown eyes as the man stepped intothe portal, taking her baby with him. It is for the best, the queenthought, she will be safe there, with him. She then turned back tothe battle. It is time to end this fight, she continued to think, butthe battle is far from over. The Dark Wizard will come back, and hewill want revenge. The queen dried her eyes, as she thought of thesacrifice she had just made, and turned toward the battle as a roarfilled the air.
I'm not sure if I want to continue it, but I had the idea for this for a few years now... Kept trying to write it, but it's hard to start... So it might be a while before the next time I write more of this. It's different than something like Skulduggery but I hope you like it anyway. This is just the prologue, mind you. It'll be better. If I can just get a good start on it. -_-'
